🏡 Should You Renovate… or Just Move?
This is one of the most common conversations I’ve been having lately.
“Should we renovate our current home… or is it time to move?”
And the truth is—it depends.
But not in a vague way.
There are usually pretty clear signs once you know what to look for.
When renovating makes sense
Renovating can be a great option when:
• You like your location
• The layout mostly works
• You just need updates or better functionality
Sometimes, a kitchen update, opening up a wall, or reworking a space can completely change how a home feels.
And in many cases, those changes can add real value.
When moving might be the better option
There are also times when renovating isn’t the best solution.
Especially when:
• The layout doesn’t work at all
• You’ve outgrown the home
• The location no longer fits your lifestyle
• The cost of renovation starts getting close to buying something better
Because at a certain point, you’re investing into something that still won’t fully meet your needs.
What most people don’t think about
This is where it gets interesting.
It’s not just about cost—it’s about outcome.
I always ask:
👉 “If you put this money into your current home… will it truly feel like the home you want?”
If the answer is yes—renovating can be a great move.
If the answer is “not really”… that’s usually your answer.
What I help my clients do
This is something I love helping clients with.
We look at:
• What your home is worth now
• What strategic updates could do to that value
• What it would cost to renovate
• And what your options look like if you moved instead
Sometimes the answer is renovate.
Sometimes it’s move.
Sometimes it’s a mix of both (renovate slightly, then sell).
My take
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.
But there is a right answer for you.
And usually, it becomes really clear once you look at it from both a lifestyle and financial perspective.
If you’ve been thinking about this—even a little—it’s a great conversation to have.
Because the right decision here can make a big difference long term.
